Kickstart Your Day With The Right Morning Routine

Exercise, meditation, a healthy breakfast … these are some of the “#goals” aspirations for most Americans today. You’ve probably read all the blogs and seen the Instagram posts about how to start your day on the right foot, but how much of it is true? If you’re not heading to bed until after your favorite show ends, you might find it tough to wake up at the crack of dawn to do yoga before heading off to work.

Still, building a morning routine that works for your lifestyle is key to kickstarting your day with purpose (even if it’s just 5 minutes to yourself.)

How I Discovered My Morning Routine

I’m lucky to be a California guy. With quick access to the beach, I’m able to wake up and spend a little time in the sand to find my sanity in the morning. I wasn’t always so on top of my routine, though. Mornings used to be hectic: hit snooze 3 or 4 times (sometimes 5 or 6 times, who’s counting?) and then get ready in a frenzy.

Then I read “Purpose Your Day: Most Important Task (MIT)” on Leo Babauta’s site, In this short article, he talks about how creating a quick bulleted list of to-do’s first thing in the morning helps him feel more prepared for his day. I wanted to try the concept.

Today, I start my day as slowly as I can, waking about 30 minutes earlier than I used to. I make coffee, get ready, and write down my top three goals for the day on a slip of paper. When coffee’s done, I get in the car and head to the beach for a few minutes before going off to work.

Create Your Morning Routine

Journaling might not sound like your cup of tea, but writing down a vision for your morning can help you start crafting your routine. Think of what your perfect morning would look like. Would you hit the gym first thing? Cook up a filling breakfast? Spend time with your significant other before they head out the door? Write it all down. Then, pick two or three things you can implement ASAP—like, tomorrow morning. How early do you have to get up to make it happen?

Tweak your routine until you hit the sweet spot. It shouldn’t feel like a chore to get up and take time for yourself! Make it happen, and watch your productivity skyrocket.

    As an older male who is strangling with eating disorders and image disphoria since high school is as important to me as my twice a week visits to doctors! Thank you for helping put light on a dark and lonely struggle that now is seeing I am not so alone as I thought.
